National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
aka Orange Shirt Day

The Government of Canada passed legislation to make September 30 a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an important step in the reconciliation process. It provides an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, and to honour their survivors, their families and communities.

On September 30, 2021, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation became a designated paid holiday for federally regulated workers in the public and private sector and will no longer be considered a working day for the purpose of Tribunal proceedings.

West 4th will be acknowledging this day through various ways. Here are some local events you can participate in:
Intergenerational March to Commemorate Orange Shirt Day (UBC)
Indigenous Perspective Workshop – Building Local Relationships (Virtual)

ORANGE SHIRTS

Last year we hosted an event at the Kits Common Plaza and handed out orange shirts. We encourage the businesses of West 4th and the community to bring these shirts out again this year to acknowledge the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th, 2022.
