MOV Museum of Vancouver - Sex Talk In The City

    1100 Chestnut Street

FEBRUARY 14 TO SEPTEMBER 2 - Sex Talk in the City is a multifaceted exhibition presented by MOV Museum of Vancouver (1100 Chestnut St; 604-736-4431) that teases out how people in Vancouver learn about sexuality, define pleasure, and respond to particular politics. Sex isn’t only biological, it’s cultural. Sex Talk in the City addresses issues of sexual expression, diversity, politics, and education in a fun, approachable, and thought-provoking manner.

Visitors can expect to gain context on the materials and stories they are exposed to every day - from online dating to safe sex ads to the pride parade. You're sure to leave recalling your own "birds and bees" talk with your parents and other such stories.

Note: This exhibition contains course language, sexual language, sexually suggestive scenes, and nudity presented within a historical, political, and educational context. Sex Talk in the City is intended for adults and youth 15 years and older who choose to learn about or discuss how ideas about sexuality have influenced life in Vancouver. Children younger than 15 may visit accompanied by an adult.

Sex Talk in the City is a co-production of Options for Sexual Health and the MOV. The project also involves the participation of Vancouver Queer Film Festival, Vancouver School Board, public health experts, sexologists, education scholars, historians, artists, activists, and youth.

  • "Love The Hollywood" Theatre Facade Restoration Project

"Love The Hollywood" Theatre Facade Restoration Project

    3512 West Broadway

CHURCH AT THE HOLLYWOOD IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THEY HAVE RECEIVED A GRANT FROM VANCOUVER HERITAGE FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT REPAINTING AND REFURBISHING OF THE HISTORIC HOLLYWOOD THEATRE FAÇADE AT 3123 W BROADWAY.

The Church is therefore taking the opportunity to invite donors to contribute to the project, called “Love the Hollywood” as they will be needing an additional $20,000 to complete the project. “This is an extensive labor of love that involves a local painting company, sponsorship from Benjamin Moore Paints, a grant from Vancouver Heritage Foundation and a local neon sign company. As a church, we are conscious of the cultural and community significance of the theatre, and its place in the hearts of so many Vancouverites, which is why we are inviting the community to partner with us and our sponsors in this,” said Sarah Kift, Communications Manager of the Church.

“Our eight months in the theatre as a congregation (since September 16, 2012) has been a gift and a joy, and we carefully steward the building to ensure that the community is welcome into the Hollywood for many different types of cultural events and fundraisers for in support of community programs and strategic partnerships.” The church has partnered with Kitisilano Neighbourhood House, Vancouver Heritage Foundation, Bayview Parent Preschool Association, Neighbourhoods for Sustainable Vancouver, AMS External Affairs, Pacific Theatre, CBC Radio Canada, Regent College, West Broadway & West 4th BIAs and many individual artists and craftspeople, as well as smaller community groups. “We have sought to bring everything from music, movies and arts to heritage events to life in this historic theatre, as well as inviting the community to explore the spiritual dimension of life,” said Kift.

To take the Hollywood back to its original glory (circa 1936) will involve removing the neon, stripping the paint on all surfaces, and commissioning custom stencils and custom neon work to restore the signage and complete façade, at an estimated cost of $20,000 (in addition to the generous grant from Vancouver Heritage Foundation).

All funds donated will be held and used specifically to pay for the restoration and maintenance of the Hollywood Theatre. Cheques are to be made out to our registered charitable society, “Point Grey Community Church” and specified as for the “Love the Hollywood” campaign.
